Services ...
Senior Center Services are provided Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. They include:
Nutrition RCAC provides one complete meal daily to seniors in the Center (Congregate Dining) and to frail elderly seniors in their homes (Home Delivered Meals). This meal is designed to provide one third of the daily-recommended dietary allowance and to promote healthy eating habits. For the homebound, additional food is added during the winter months. On request from a physician, modified diets are available.
Life Enrichment Education The Community College of Allegheny County has developed a series of courses to promote the independence and physical and social well-being and to develop and improve the skills of the senior population. These classes can range from fitness to crafts.
Socialization/Recreation RCAC sponsors additional classes; such as line dancing and 55 Alive Driving. The trips can range from museums to casinos. Also, afternoon bingo, card groups, and many special events. The Golden Eagle newsletter is mailed monthly to over 1600 households; this keeps people up-to-date and informed of our activities and lunch menu.
Primetime Health/Healthy Endeavors This program is customized to meet the needs of active Older Adults. There is a fitness trainer available who will assist all participants with a program that can help provide for flexibility, strengthening, cardiovascular, endurance, and relaxation. Also provided is a roundtable discussion on current wellness and health issues. The classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. Weekly blood pressure monitoring is conducted every Thursday from 9:30 am to 11:30 am by registered nurses.
Information & Referral There is always a staff person on hand to provide information about available services and to register seniors for those services, such as ACCESS, OPT, and center service. Assistance is also provided during tax season from VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). They assist with income tax, property tax, rent rebate, and PACE. Through the Elderly Law Project an attorney is available, by appointment, to any senior in Allegheny County.
RCAC works to serve the needs of both seniors and non-seniors throughout Oakmont, Verona, and the neighboring communities through the following:
Emergency Food Pantry RCAC operates a community Food Pantry which responds to all calls for assistance within the boroughs of Oakmont and Verona. The purpose of the pantry is to aid area residents experiencing an emergency need or unexpected crisis. If a large need arises referrals to area rotation pantries are available.
